The Top Hat Club of Netheravon

The Club takes its name from a friendly benefit society “Established at the Fox & Hounds Inn, Netheravon, Wilts, on the 29th May, 1840 for the purpose of raising a fund by subscription for the benefit of the members in time of sickness, infirmity etc…

Netheravon

Netheravon Farms

The  economy of the area was dominated  by agriculture until the arrival of  the military  at   the end  of the C19th. Yet the history of the farms before that time of great change is difficult  to trace so this  is a project we  will be  building gradually as we  gather information.

Netheravon Village Clock and Post Office

The clock was put up to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897, above the door of what was then the village Post Office.

The Dovecote

Netheravon dovecote stands 100 metres to the north west of Netheravon House and 60 metres west of the church, in the middle of a paddock.

The three mills.  In 1086 there were three water mills in Netheravon .  Two of them were probably in the same building or nearby, in what is now  Mill Road.

The Motor Garage

The Motor Garage has literature and photographs of the garage dating back to the early 1930s but believe its origins date back further, we believe to the 1920s at least.

Netheravon School

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic – “The three Rs” were becoming increasingly valued towards the end of the 18th century and while many of the less fortunate in society could read a little by then, they often could not write.

Batt Family History of Netheravon & Surrounding area

James Margetts has been researching his family history and he has been extremely fortunate that his Great Grandmother kept a mass of historical documents/notes which assisted in this enjoyable search to document his families history.

He believes that the Batt family had a long association with Wiltshire, particularly the Netheravon area – so there may be some distant cousins locally that may be able to shed more light on this family.
